Frequently Asked Questions
What is CPWC-MBR, and who is it for?
The CPWC Medical Bill Review (MBR) program is a certification designed to fulfill California’s state requirement for Medical Bill Reviewers. It covers 10 modules that teach you everything from fee schedules and billing codes to utilization review, medical-legal dispute resolution, and liens. It’s ideal for new claims professionals, TPAs, adjusters, medical bill reviewers, HR and benefits staff, and anyone who wants a solid grounding (or refresher) in California workers’ compensation medical billing.
Does CPWC-MBR satisfy the state training requirement in California?
Yes. The program meets the 30 classroom hours of training required by the State of California for Medical Bill Reviewers.

What Happens if I don't pass a lesson?
To pass each module you must complete all lectures, reading and assignments, view all resources, and pass the exam. You have two attempts to pass the exam. If you are unable to pass the 2nd time, please contact info@ieatraining.org to discuss your options.
How often is the content updated to reflect changes in law/regulation?
Because California’s workers’ compensation law (fee schedules, UR rules, IBR, etc.) changes periodically, the CPWC-MBR materials are reviewed and updated regularly to remain compliant. This ensures you’re learning the latest standards and how to apply them in current practice.
What are the prerequisites? Do I need experience in claims or medical billing?
There are no strict prerequisites. The program is built to accommodate both people new to workers’ compensation and those who are already in the field but want to update or deepen their knowledge. While experience helps, the modules are designed to cover foundational topics.
What happens after I finish the course? (Jobs, roles, continuing education, etc.)
After completing CPWC-MBR, you’ll be prepared to serve in roles involving medical bill reviewing, claims adjusting, auditing, and similar functions in workers’ compensation. Employers increasingly expect this certification for work in medical cost containment, fee schedule compliance, utilization review, and lien resolution. You may also use this toward continuing education requirements or state regulatory compliance as appropriate.
