IEA’s roots can be traced back to the Fire Underwriters Association of the Pacific (FUAP), which began offering fire insurance classes in San Francisco. This modest start marked the beginning of what would become a cornerstone of professional education in the insurance industry.
As the organization grew, it became clear that a new name was needed to reflect its expanding role. Renamed the Insurance Educational Association, IEA was established as a not-for-profit association with strong support from California’s insurance industry. Its mission: to deliver high-quality education for property casualty and life insurance professionals.
IEA introduced the Workers’ Compensation Claims Administration Certificate, a four-course program that quickly became its most sought-after offering. This program set the standard for workers’ compensation education in California and paved the way for the Workers’ Compensation Claims Professional (WCCP) designation, an advanced program launched in the 1990s for seasoned claims professionals.
As IEA expanded its reach to Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona, it also introduced the Certified Professional in Disability Management (CPDM) designation. Developed in collaboration with the Disability Management Employer Coalition (DMEC), CPDM became the leading designation for absence and disability management, earning national recognition.
In 2020, amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, IEA transformed into a fully remote, for-profit organization, continuing its unwavering commitment to providing top-tier education. By embracing new ways of learning and staying attuned to the evolving needs of the industry, IEA remains dedicated to empowering professionals in workers’ compensation and disability management.

1945

IEA traces its roots to the Fire Underwriters Association of the Pacific (FUAP). By 1945 the organization had an educational component offering a few fire insurance related classes in San Francisco.

1960

In the 1960’s the name was changed to Insurance Educational Association to better reflect the true nature of the organization.

2000

IEA was a membership organization. General members were insurance companies and statewide industry organizations. Membership fees were kept low, and students from member organizations received a discounted tuition fee for each program attended. In addition, many local associations joined as well to lend their support.

Present Day​

IEA continued to maintain its principal offices in San Francisco and Newport Beach although eventually only the Newport Beach office would remain. For a brief period IEA maintained a small office in Sacramento. Geographic expansion beyond California proved difficult. IEA often ran into competition from existing organizations but had limited success with its Workers’ Compensation Claims programs. Classes were offered in both Arizona (Phoenix) and Oregon (Portland). In both cases District Coordinators were employed as independent contractors to help organize and market the programs.
