When Medical Restrictions Become Permanent

Accommodation Decisions in ‘Totally Disabled’ Cases

When an employee transitions from temporary limitations to permanent medical restrictions, the employer’s obligations shift. What happens when the organization must evaluate reasonable accommodation options, yet the employee continues to submit documentation stating they are “totally disabled”?

This session will guide participants through the critical decision points: evaluating essential job functions, exploring accommodation alternatives, considering reassignment, and maintaining compliance with ADA/FEHA requirements—all within a structured, good-faith interactive process.
