What does a workers’ comp adjuster actually do?

When someone is hurt on the job, the adjuster is the person who manages their claim from the first report to the day it closes. You are part investigator, part decision-maker, and part advocate for a fair outcome. It is desk-based, people-focused work, and in California it follows a specific set of rules that employers need trained people to apply correctly.

A typical week includes work like this:

Reviewing new claims and gathering the facts of what happened
Coordinating medical care and reviewing doctors’ reports
Deciding which benefits apply under California law
Talking with injured workers, employers, and providers
Calculating and authorizing benefit payments
Keeping clear, accurate records on every claim

Why work comp, why now

Experienced adjusters are retiring faster than they can be replaced, and California employers are hiring. It is one of the few stable, well-paid careers you can train for in months, not years, with no degree required.

The work also holds up. Claims turn on judgment, weighing medical opinions, applying California’s rules to real situations, and earning trust with people at a hard moment. That human, regulated work is among the hardest to automate, which makes learning it now a durable move.
